Dragonwings vs. Syria WikiProject
Assignment Description

In this assignment, our group (Helen W, Joie, and me) was supposed to be able to "Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says," "Explain how an author develops the point of veiw," and "Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative and connotative meanings..." Well, that was what the standards said we should be able to do. Some other main things that we did in the project that were requested by Ms. Aubrey were to express creativity and originality. The main project itself, as described in the title of this block, it to compare Dragonwings, the novel by Laurence Yep, to the ongoing Syrian civil war and refugee crisis. For example, one of the topics in this project was immigrants versus refugees. The assignment shows my abilities to learn because although the project wasn't too interesting, I did learn a few facts along the way. Nothing particularly surprised me, and I would think that all the information that was put into a fun and creative way could really have been done in probably a few hours just taking notes and Googling stuff. The assignment shows my growth as a person/learner because I didn't complain NEARLY as much as I used to. Instead I have redirected efforts to complaining about the flaws of the education system as a whole, instead of a single aspect. Bam. It also shows my patience for it, and the amount of work I put into it is greater than usual, probably because we had to do stuff, but the amount I put in is still less than the other things I do, like FUN stuff. I have decided to include this peice because I have spent a lot of work on this with my group, and also partially because the teacher said by the end of the year we had to have one assignment in each category, and there wasn't much else to put in.

Self Assesment

Some strengths and weaknesses of this project are probably some of my responses, the weak bit, and the amount of effort I put into the other stuff, the strong bit. I think my responses in general were weaker, because I am not a person who likes to sit around writing a response to something that we learned or did in school, and I would rather write about something I wanted to write about, like Fat Raccoon Goes Fishing (a great short story). I would like to think the amount effort I put in to be the strong point, because as I said before, usually I don't put in too much effort. I don't feel like I took any risks during this project, although I did try to embed Google Maps in the project, something I had not done before. I like to plan things out, and everything seemed to go to plan, really. Some things I would like to improve on if there was a next time is visuals, and probably creativity, as I feel the project was kind of bland, like soup without the stuff you put in soup. Otherwise, I don't think I would change much, as putting in effort is not really my style. For example, if you said that 100 points equals a full grade, and 50 equals half, I would try to land somewhere in the late 80s and early 90s, as being too perfect can also hurt you in ways.

Learning and Application

I learned that actually bothering to put effort into things is hard, and also that the portfolio is something we could possibly look back on, but I probably won't, so I am maybe, just maybe, wasting a massive amount of time. I also learned that good enough is good enough, and that to really finalize and polish something you need a LOT more time. I hope in the future (as of now it is 1-6-16) we could get more time to finalize stuff. This peice could in fact connect to a lot of things, and it could connect to video games (the document I am reading the questions from never said that it had to be educational, and this is why people need to be more specific) because video games, especially the ones aimed for comepletionists, aim for you to put in effort, and then you get rewarded with an awesome hat or a shiny new badge. For an educational video game (hold on, let me go laugh over in this corner) you could be rewarded with information, and when you get rewarded with education it could better prepare you for future assingments, and also if something required you to do a similar skill you could accomplish it better.
